On the Greek island of Samothrace, the natives are born dispossessed. They mourn the loss of their Nike, the most beautiful of classical statues, the timeless embodiment of victory and grace. Buried in an earthquake, she was recovered in the 1860s by a French antiquarian — only to be whisked away to ornament the Louvre. Even today the islanders can hear the sickening clatter of shovels, of spade hitting marble, of a Frenchman profaning the Greek word Eureka! They long for repatriation. They want their Nike back. No one feels this loss, this grudge, so deeply as Photi Anthropotis. Keeper of the ruins of the sanctuary, the damaged, hapless Photi dreams of glory, of rescuing his goddess in distress. He is abetted in his fantasy by two beautiful women, an innocent, love-starved French museum guard and a glamorous, narcissistic American documentary filmmaker. Together they hatch the art theft of the century — together, but each to his or her own ends.
Two years ago I bought a similar plan book in the states. Wonderful ! Over 20 years working as a teacher and principal in an elementary school I never found the right planning book. Now this. Great. Last year I ve got a present, another plan book. Terrible to get such a present and I decided to buy these wonderful Lesson Plan Books for 2 years. I use it in Germany. It s fantastic ! (The price to send it to Germany is higher than the price of the 2 books. You see, the book is the best I know.)

Review by Jason M Ritenour for Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection
Rating:
I never had a Genesis, so I missed out on a lot of great games. I’ve played the first Sonic, and some of these games in the arcade, but overall, I never got to experience the glory days of Sega. Also, it’s hard to find PS3 games that appeal to my fiance, and she was excited at the prospect of playing Ecco the Dolphin & the Sonic games again.

There are nearly 50 games on here, and when you consider how much the various games would cost on the Wii virtual console, or Xbox Live arcade, this is an amazing deal. Even at , this would be a great deal, but at , it’s a no brainer.

The presentation is pretty slick, the main menu looks like a Genesis unit, and the games are a stack of cartridges you sort through. You can rate games on a 5 star scale, and then sort them in the order you rated them, so your least favorite games will fall to the bottom of the list.

The only complaint I have is that the line “all titles have been converted to high def” is wrong and misleading. A filter has been applied to make the games look better at a higher resolution, nothing has been reworked or remade to take advantage of HD. The good thing is you can switch between 4:3 and 16:9 on the fly, and turn the filter off if you want. I will say that the games on this collection have looked a lot better than their Virtual Console counterparts on my TV.

Overall, you can’t go wrong with this collection. Whether you’re an old Genesis lover wanting a trip down memory lane, or someone who missed out on Sega’s golden age and want to see what all the hype was about, this is a must-buy.

Ahh yes, the 1980′s and 1990′s. Two great periods of video games for the Sega franchise.

First, the arcade stand-ups – their machines called out to be filled with quarters offering level after level of difficult challenges to overcome. When the 1980′s were drawing to a close and people were ready to move beyond the limits of 8-bit Nintendo games, Sega introduced their 4th generation home video game console, the Sega Genesis. This 16-bit system offered better graphics, longer Role-Playing Games, and one speedy hedgehog that tested the patience of even the most seasoned gamer.

This compilation combines 40 games from Sega’s Genesis library, 7 of their stand-up arcade ports and 2 games from the Sega Master System, all on one disc.

Some of these games are initially locked, but they can be unlocked without much difficulty.

Graphics: First off, let’s be honest – since these are 3rd and 4th generation video games, graphically they are not “cutting edge”. If your earliest gaming console was a Sony Playstation, these games will look pre-historic to you. Most of the games have a faux background and the gameplay is centered in the middle of the screen in a 4:3 default format. The aspect ratio can be changed to letterbox (16:9) and there is even an option to smooth the graphics – but with games like these, smoothing actually takes away from the nostalgia.

Options: I love the options this compilation offers! Not only can you set your own button layouts and turn on/off the rapid fire option, but you can save your progress on every single game! Games like Sonic the Hedgehog were very unforgiving and had no save points when they were first released…but with 3 save slots at your disposal, you can take your time to complete the games at your own pace.

Gameplay: With 49 games to choose from, there are several genres at your fingertips:

Want a platformer? Try Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle.

Fancy a beat `em up? Altered Beast is calling you.

Itching for an epic RPG? Try Phantasy Star III.

How about a puzzle game? Stack up the Columns.

Maybe an action game? Suit up with ESWAT.

Side Scroller fan? Ecco the Dolphin needs your help.

Hack & Slash, eh? Grab some grog and try out Golden Axe.

Perhaps you prefer a shooter? Space Harrier is all about the bullets!

You’d like a good old fashioned Run `n’ Gun? Look no further than Vectorman 2.

Whatever type of gameplay you like, it can be found in this collection.

Extras: There are interviews with several Sega employees made specifically for this collection. You can tell each person put their heart & soul into their game of choice…it was a different time. Nowadays, people like Hideo Kojima have 200 people at their disposal, whereas most of these games were made by very small teams. There is a brief history and graphic artwork for each game, a nice piece of nostalgia.

Trophies: The trophies for this game are a mixed bag. Some trophies are laughably easy (such as Ecco the Dolphin – this trophy is earned by simply talking to another dolphin!), while others like Dr. Robitnik’s M.B.M. trophy (beat the game) are tooth-grindingly difficult. I thought the trophy for “Final Oasis” was a good example – the goal to free the water spirit took some time, but didn’t require completing the entire game. I loved the trophy requiring every game to be played at least once.

As far as negatives, there is only one that comes to mind, the exclusion of the “lock-on” gameplay for Sonic 3, Sonic 2, and the Blue Sphere levels. This allowed gamers to play as Knuckles instead of Sonic, which could not be done at the time due to software/hardware limitations. Since the Playstation 3 is a 7th generation video game console, I was surprised these were excluded. I hope they will show up as a download from the Playstation Network before too long.

Conclusion?

If you want to take a trip down video game memory lane for a great price, this is the best collection to do it with – it breaks down to less than a dollar per game. For your portable needs, I strongly recommend the Sega Genesis Collection for the PSP.

Spot on emulation and save states certainly equals 5 stars in my book! Aside from eagerly anticipating Volume 2, I can’t think of anything lacking from this collection!

Simply stated, superb… the first review captured most of what I want to relay about this, so I won’t belabor the situation.

5 stars, my highest recommendation!!

All 3 Streets of Rage games are here, too!!! A first!!

The third volume of music from ‘Glee’ features some of the best numbers from the first season of the show. While the first two volumes’ music ranged from just ‘all right’ to ‘good’, I feel there are definitely stronger, better performances on this deluxe edition of the third volume. As with the other releases from ‘Glee’, there are still some missing numbers but in all, the 19 tracks included in the deluxe edition are pretty good and there are only a few tracks that I’d skip or would have left off.

The Good: What I like about this volume is that there are tracks and performances included from more of the cast. The first two releases felt like nothing more than a promotional vehicle for Lea Michele and her Rachel character. With this release, there are definitely tracks that show off more of the cast. You have Amber Riley’s stand-out moment this year (both in song and in terms of acting) with her cover of Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful”; Mark Salling taking on “Lady Is A Tramp”; Chris Colfer with “A House Is Not a Home” and “Rose’s Turn”. You also have some of the second half of the season’s guest stars’ performances including Kristin Chenoweth’s awesome take on “Home” from ‘The Wiz’; Jane Lynch (Sue Sylvester) and Olivia Newton-John’s re-interpretation of “Physical”; Idina Menzel with ‘I Dreamed A Dream’. There are also some great cast/group numbers including the Glee-take on Lady GaGa’s “Bad Romance”, U2′s “One” and Bonnie Taylor’s ’80s hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart”. My overall complaint with the past two volumes is that there wasn’t enough variety and too many numbers seemed to feature Lea Michele while the other cast membership were reduced to back-up. This volume represents a shift in the series’ second volume (or second part of the first season) by having more of the cast step-up with numbers. With new voices, sounds and styles, I have to say this is by far the superior of the volumes of music released so-far from the show. Some may also complain that this release is missing the songs from the big Madonna episode but all of those songs were released already on CD so I figure the producers chose not to repeat themselves by adding any of those tracks (even if they would qualify as ‘showstoppers’).

In all, a pretty solid release with minor flaws. I’m glad there was a deluxe version released with more tracks rather than having just one standard edition as with the past two volumes with only a handful tracks. I felt a lot of these tracks were better produced and performed than the first two volumes of music that felt a bit too close to karaoke (but good karaoke). If you’re a fan of the show and haven’t been purchasing the tracks each week as they’ve been released digitally, this is definitely for you.

The Bad: This being a deluxe edition of volume 3, I was hoping there would be fewer numbers left off. However, it seems the powers-that-be still chose to overlook some of the better performances in an effort to either mix it up or save on royalties (who knows). Some numbers I wish had made it onto the actual CD were “Fire” performed by Kristin Chenoweth and Matthew Morrison, “Ice Ice Baby” or “U Can’t Touch This” (only one of these ‘bad’ numbers seemed necessary but neither are included), “The Boy Is Mine” and “Jessie’s Girls”. Considering this is coming out before the show even wraps the season, I’m sure there will be other minor numbers that come with the last few episodes that get released digitally but don’t make it onto this release. Another complaint I have is the timing of the release. Would it have been hard to hold off a week or two in releasing this? The best part of ‘Glee’ is in fact the music and never knowing until the day of the show what numbers and songs are going to end up on the show. Yet, here we are ‘spoiled’ by having 8 tracks that have yet to appear on the show on this release, including (for the most part) what order they’ll appear in the season. If the last two tracks end up being the big numbers in the final episode, that’s going to take away a bit from the surprise or enjoyment of the finale because we’d have been exposed to the music for more than a few weeks. Sure, ‘Glee’ is as much about the performance than it is the songs but in some cases, one ends up being better than the other.

Listen To These: “Loser”, “One Less Bell To Answer/A House Is Not a Home”, “Physical”, “Total Eclipse of the Heart”, “Safety Dance”, “Bad Romance”

Review by David Pearlman for Glee: The Music, Volume 3 Showstoppers (Deluxe)
Rating:
As with the previous CD volumes drawn from Glee, this one is a mixed bag. Some of the songs work great with the visuals, but are dull or irrelevant as a listening-only experience. The songs that work best are those that add something substantial to the well known hit version, either in terms of arrangement or vocal.

The best songs here are Hello, Goodbye (a nice vocal arrangement), Hello (a beautiful duet), the One less Bell to Answer/A House is Not a Home medley (terrifically sung by Broadway vet Kristin Chenoweth), Home (another Chenowith number, and possibly the definitive recorded rendition), One (in a full cast arrangement that truly elevates this U2 song to another level), and Poker Face (stripped down to a piano ballad and sung as duet).

The worst songs are Physical (a lousy techno-inspired voicebox heavy remake of the Olivia Newton John hit) and the pointless Safety Dance, which loses all the charm of the ’80s hit. The Kiss cover, Beth, is surprisingly bad, owing to poor phrasing relative to the original.

The rest of the songs are fine, but mostly too close to the originals to be very interesting.

Again, as with previous volumes, auto-tuning runs rampant on many of these songs.

There are seven songs that appeared in the show during the period covered by this CD that don’t appear on the CD itself: Fire (Pointer Sisters), Highway to Hell (AC/DC), Ice Ice Baby (Vanilla Ice), Jessie’s Girl (Rick Springfield), Run Joey Run (David Geddes), The Boy is Mine (Brandy & Monica) and U Can’t Touch This (MC Hammer). (Original artists shown in parentheses). Of these, the most interesting is Run Joey Run, a well sung cover of a hammy one-shot from the late ’70s–this one should have been included on the CD. For most of the others the Glee rendition is not different enough from the original.

One last comment: For a show promoted as “family viewing”, the subject material of certain songs will present problems to some parents. Specifically, the lyrics to “Poker Face” are quite racy, and unlike the case for the highly produced Lady Gaga original, here there’s no ignoring them. Some might also find Beck’s “Loser” somewhat problematic. It is doubtful adults will be bothered, but since this show has a substantial younger audience, this is worthy of note…These two songs with questionable lyrical content do not appear on the 14 song (non “Deluxe”) version of the soundtrack, and some parents may wish to consider that version as an alternative.

On the whole, Glee fans will enjoy this CD, but I suspect almost everyone will wind up hitting the skip button to focus on their favorites. Some parents will probably wind up skipping a couple of the songs based on lyrical content, or they can opt to buy the shorter version of this soundtrack that does not contain the objectionable songs.

Review by Kate McMurry for Glee: The Music, Volume 3 Showstoppers (Deluxe)
Rating:
I’m a huge fan of Glee, but before I listened to this CD, I worried that the songs wouldn’t be as much fun separated from powerful live performances. Not so. They stand terrifically on their own. However, the CD doesn’t include much information about the songs the Glee cast covers. Curiosity led me to search out as much as I could about them, and here is what I learned for anyone who is interested:

Track 1: Hello, Goodbye. A duet by Lea Michele (Rachel Berry) and Cory Monteith (Finn Hudson) with the Glee cast. This is a Beatles song written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and released in 1967 on the album “Magical Mystery Tour.” I love this song, and Lea and Cory did an excellent rendition.

Track 2: Gives You Hell. A Lea/Rachel solo with the Glee cast. This is a Top 10 song from the All-American Rejects, written by Tyson Ritter and Nick Wheeler, from the 2008 album “When the World Comes Down.” This style isn’t Lea’s strength, but she does a very good job with it.

Track 3: Hello. A duet by Lea/Rachel and Jonathan Groff (Jesse St. James) with the Glee cast. This song is part of Lionel Richie’s 1984 multi-platinum album “Can’t Slow Down.” Jonathan, a Broadway star like Lea, has a gorgeous baritone voice and the blend of his voice with Lea’s is breathtaking.

Track 4: A House Is Not A Home. A duet by Chris Colfer (Kurt Hummel) and Cory/Finn, with an impressive display of Kurt’s amazing falsetto. Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote this song, and Dionne Warwick first recorded it in 1964.

Track 5: One Less Bell To Answer/A House Is Not A Home. A duet by the incredibly talented Kristin Chenoweth (April Rhodes) and the wonderful Matthew Morrison (Will Schuester). Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote “One Less Bell to Answer” in 1967 for Keely Smith. In 1970 The 5th Dimension included it in their debut album, Portrait, and it was a major hit. Kristin offers, as always, a spectacular performance. Her voice literally gives me chills.

Track 6: Beautiful. A solo by Amber Riley (Mercedes Jones) with the Glee cast. Amber normally belts out her songs, but she performs this song about loving oneself with a gentle touch that is both a surprising change and very moving. Beautiful was written and produced by Linda Perry and recorded by Christina Aguilera for her second studio album “Stripped” in 2002. She won the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2004 for this song, and it was ranked 52 on Rolling Stone’s top 100 songs of the decade. That’s a lot to take on, but Amber is more than up to the task.

Track 7: Home. A solo by Kristin Chenoweth. This song is the closing number from the 1975, Tony-winning musical, “The Wiz,” and as a Broadway star, Chenoweth treats us with another stellar musical experience. In a Glee season of top performances, I think this has to be among the top three.

Track 8: Physical. Olivia Newton-John, with humorous assistance by Jane Lynch (Sue Sylvester). On the episode “Bad Reputation,” Olivia, together with Jane, performs in a hilarious remake of her world-famous video of the biggest hit song of her career from 1981. Seen visually, it’s a total romp, and this is a very cute track.

Track 9: Total Eclipse Of The Heart. Lea/Rachel and Jonathan/Jesse perform an intense duet of Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler’s huge hit from 1983, “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” The song was written and produced by Jim Steinman for her fifth studio album, “Faster Than the Speed of Night,” and sold six million copies worldwide.

Track 10: The Lady Is A Tramp. Amber/Mercedes and Puck (Mark Salling) in a fabulous, jazzy duet. This is a show tune from the 1937 Broadway musical “Babes in Arms” by Rodgers and Hart. Multiple stars have recorded it, including Lena Horne, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Shirley Bassey, and Sammy Davis Jr.

Track 11: One. A duet with Lea/Rachel and Corey/Finn. (One source claims the male singer is Zack Weinstein, the actor who plays quadriplegic Sean Fretthold in the episode this is from, “Laryngitis,” but, if so, his voice is identical to Finn’s.) “One” is from the 1991 album “Achtung Baby” by the Irish rock band U2, lyrics by lead singer Bono. Not only one of U2′s greatest hits, it’s considered one of the greatest songs of all time. It’s been covered by Johnny Cash, Joe Cocker, Mary J. Blige, R.E.M., Gregorian, Warren Haynes, Shinedown, and Pearl Jam.

Track 12. Rose’s Turn. Solo by Chris/Kurt. This is a marvelous, gender-bending switch on a song usually sung by a middle-aged woman in the hit Broadway musical, “Gypsy,” from 1959. Chris does a super job with it.

Track 13. Dream On. Neil Patrick Harris (Bryan Ryan, a school board member who was a glee-club rival of Will’s when they were in high school) pairs up with Matthew/Will for a dueling delivery of Aerosmith’s 1973 hit. Harris’s baritone blends well with Matthew’s tenor in this high-energy number.

Track 14. Safety Dance. Solo by Artie (Kevin McHale). This is an early 80′s Top 10 hit from the Canadian New Wave group, Men Without Hats. It’s bouncy and sheer fun, and Kevin’s wonderful voice is a pleasure to hear.

Track 15. I Dreamed A Dream. Broadway star Idina Menzel (Shelby Corcoran, coach of rival glee club, Vocal Adrenaline) sings a duet with Lea/Rachel. This is a very challenging song from the 1980 musical, “Les Misérables” but both Lea/Rachel and Menzel are completely up for the job. Like Chenoweth, Menzel has a truly superlative voice.

Track 16. Loser. A duet by Cory/Finn and Mark/Puck. This is a really interesting, quirky performance with a combination of rap and singing. Loser is a 1994 hit by alternative rocker Beck.

Even when questioning his young life, Mayer’s doubts come off glib; not one second of “Why Georgia” convinces that “the stirring in my soul” keeps the artiste awake at night. Between his Dave Matthews-wannabe vocals and the a
Review by T. S. We all go through those periods when we look at our entire CD collection and say “YUCK!”. After that we say a silent prayer to the CD god to send us a new album to renew our faith in music. John Mayer’s ROOM FOR SQUARES hits the spot! You’ll be listening to his inner heart with every track. God bless this guy’s parents. They did a wonderful job!As a songwriter, John has a very unique perspective. I can only compare it to Dar Williams in that it’s a hybrid or worldly wisdom and childlike innocence. It’s as though he’s experiencing everything he’s writing about for the first time and he’s thrilled with the new discoveries. The consistency is pretty solid too. Each track is well polished and beautifully worded. His sound is that of shimmering pop, without the computers. His melodies are graceful and catchy as all get out. His voice has a similar timbre as Dave Matthews but (with all due respect) his falsetto is far better. There’s a clarity in John’s voice that I don’t experience in Dave’s either. The tones are both fun and reflective. Great album to clean your house to on a Saturday! By buying this album you’re basically purchasing the diary of a bright eyed boy looking at the world through newly acquired adult eyes. It’s positively enchanting.

John Mayer has a voice that captures the sultry sound of Seal and recalls the crisp rhythyms of Dave Matthews. Take a listen to this CD and you will notice the influence of many genres and musicians: jazz, blues, R&B as well as rock. Mayers muisc is mellow enough to listen to when you are working and up enough that you will find yourself dancing in your chair without realizing it. He is a classic songwriter… in what is a nice contrast to much of the mainstream music, his lyrics are not a streaming jumble of verbiage leaving you nothing but a vague sense of frustration, but words to relate to. His songs are truly artistic and expressive, showcasing the sometimes meloncholic beauty of life. His subject matter is of a wandering soul, for whom every experience is a new one. I could have skipped “No Such Thing” because I twitch whenever I hear the words “high school” but his point is a good one- draw your own lines, there is no real world. Likewise, all his songs are effective at delivering a message. In the catchy “Why Georgia” the message is a question we all ask, Where am I going? Life, “am I living it right”? Ever say something you wish you could take back? Johns answer is “My Stupid Mouth”. If you are a woman, you wish you were facing Johns singing, “Your Body Is A Wonderland” (me, personally, I’m jealous of whoever that might be). You’d swear you’ve had “Neon” in your collection forever, with a natural melody and an R&B/jazz feel that will have you singing along. If you can’t relate to these songs, you just aren’t human… “City Love” conveys the excitement of a new relationship, “83″- stolen innocence, “3×5″- a long distance relationship, “St. Patricks Day”- overrated singlehood and the dating scene. “Great Indoors” is Mayers version of yelling, ‘Carpe Diem!’ as well as suggesting we look inside ourselves. I did. Hearing one song, “Love Song For No One”, made me buy this album… I recommend you do the same. If you like Train, Dave Matthews, Peter Gabriel, Sister Hazel or Seal, there is very good chance you will like this CD. And it will definitely leave you with a smile.

For a 4 star rating, you’d think I love the cd, but let me say a few things. I’ve read a bunch of these reviews and I must admit the comments are just as interesting as the music itself. He is hated and adored but not much in between. Many musician types (like me, but not me specifically) keep saying John Mayer is too teeny bopper with a guitar, or that he’s too sappy and gutless. The album does have some over-sentimentality that comes off as a bit gratuitous (but pleases females). John is a guy who can play the hell out of an acoustic guitar, HAPPENS to have a singing voice like Dave Matthews, and is apparently a little too easy-going. I very much admire his lyrical ability. He can say things in a very effective poignant way, although the lyrics can seem contrived at times. With lines like “I could have met you in a sand-box”, it’s evident he was thinking of how he could score as much tail as quickly as possible with the girls in Lit. Class.
I think what many critical people about the album are trying to say, but aren’t aware of is that John IS very talented but also too smart for his own good. In other words, he knows exactly what he’s doing when he plays the shy goofball (I do it all the time). If he is to ever gain full respect for his talent he will have to put aside all the nice, nostalgic things of his adolescence and start digging a little deeper. I’m sure this will come with age. For the moment he’s singing to all the good girls and boys, and middle aged moms, but eventually he will have to start singing solely for himself. I hope he does because he has a unique sound and perspective, though both have a little growing up to do. But that’s normal.

This work is a carefully edited, student-friendly law school casebook that presents the substance of judicial reasoning. Students are given as much as they need and no more: background information from secondary stories has been added when necessary for clarity; superfluous facts have been omitted; and most citations and footnotes have been removed. Includes considerable material illustrating the effect (or relative lack of effect) upon judicial thinking of Model Penal Code formulations of the culpability requirements. Particular attention is also paid to the growing importance of federal criminal law, particularly the area of RICO prosecutions and white collar crime generally.
Review by A.
BUT the basin of the Mississippi is the BODY OF THE NATION. All the other parts are but members, important in themselves, yet more important in their relations to this. Exclusive of the Lake basin and of 300,000 square miles in Texas and New Mexico, which in many aspects form a part of it, this basin contains about 1,250,000 square miles. In extent it is the second great valley of the world, being exceeded only by that of the Amazon. The valley of the frozen Obi approaches it in extent; that of La Plata comes next in space, and probably in habitable capacity, having about eight-ninths of its area; then comes that of the Yenisei, with about seven-ninths; the Lena, Amoor, Hoang-ho, Yang-tse-kiang, and Nile, five-ninths; the Ganges, less than one-half; the Indus, less than one-third; the Euphrates, one-fifth; the Rhine, one-fifteenth. It exceeds in extent the whole of Europe, exclusive of Russia, Norway, and Sweden. IT WOULD CONTAIN AUSTRIA FOUR TIMES, GERMANY OR SPAIN FIVE TIMES, FRANCE SIX TIMES, THE BRITISH ISLANDS OR ITALY TEN TIMES. Conceptions formed from the river-basins of Western Europe are rudely shocked when we consider the extent of the valley of the Mississippi; nor are those formed from the sterile basins of the great rivers of Siberia, the lofty plateaus of Central Asia, or the mighty sweep of the swampy Amazon more adequate. Latitude, elevation, and rainfall all combine to render every part of the Mississippi Valley capable of supporting a dense population. AS A DWELLING-PLACE FOR CIVILIZED MAN IT IS BY FAR THE FIRST UPON OUR GLOBE.
Review by M. Allen Greenbaum for Life On The Mississippi
Rating:
This book–at times disjointed, rambling, self-referential, and irreverent–is decades ahead of its time. It’s an interdisciplinarian’s dream as Twain takes on economics, geography, politics, ancient and contemporary history, and folklore with equal ease. Mostly though, one appreciates his knack for exaggeration, the tall tale, and the outright lie. It’s a triumph of tone, as he lets you in on his wild wit, his keen observation, and his penchant for bending the truth without losing his credibility as a guide. The book’s structure is also modern: He recounts his days as a paddlewheel steam boat “cub,” piloting the hundreds of miles of the Mississippi before the Civil War, then, in Part 2, returns to retrace his paddleboat route. Although a few of his many digressions don’t work (they sometimes sound formulaic or too detailed) most of the narrative is extremely entertaining. Twain seems caught between admiration and disdain for the “modern” age-but he also rejects over-sentimentality over the past. He writes with beauty and cynicism, verve and humor. Let me guess: your total exposure to Mark Twain came in high school, when you were forced to read about the antics of Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer, right? Well, now that you’ve reached adulthood, you should make time to read _Life on the Mississippi_. It’s mandatory reading if you live in a state that borders the great river, anywhere from Minnesota down to Louisiana. It’s mandatory reading if you have come to that point in life when you can suddenly appreciate American history and post-Civil War stories written by someone who lived through that time. Writing in the first half of the 1870s, Twain retraces the steps of his youth: the watery highway he knew when he trained to be a riverboat pilot nearly 20 years earlier. He speaks of how life _was_ along the river, and what life _became_. It’s almost a “you can’t go home again” experience for him, while the reader gets the benefit of discovering both time periods. I have two favorite parts that I share with others. Chapter IX includes a wonderful dissertation about how learning the navigational intricacies of the river caused Twain to lose the ability to see its natural beauty. And Chapter XLV includes an assessment of how the people of the North and the South reacted differently to the war experience. If I were a social studies teacher, I’d use that last passage in a unit on the reconstruction period. So put this title on your vacation reading list, and don’t fret: the chapters are short and are many — 60! — but you can stop at any time, and the words go by fast. _Life on the Mississippi_ should make you forget all about any Twain trauma and report-writing you may have suffered as a teenager. This is the book that Mark Twain himself thought to be his greatest. It is basically a memoir in two parts of his life spent on the river with historical sketches, statistics, and other matters thrown in.

The first part of the book tells of Twain’s early years as a riverboat pilot. He talks about being a cub pilot, about learning about the intricacies of the river and the difficulties of navigating it, and about his mentor Horace Bixby. Twain’s love of the river and his pride in “mastering” it are made obvious in these chapters.

The second part recounts Twain’s return to the river in 1882, mainly to “see it again” in preparation of writing this book. Starting in St. Louis, he first goes south through Baton Rouge to New Orleans. He spends a bit of time there and describes life as he sees it in the city (there’s a funny chapter regarding the above-ground cemeteries and an argument about cremation). Then he heads north on the steamboat City of Baton Rouge, piloted by his old mentor Horace Bixby. He stops off in Hannibal for three days, just enough time to see how much the town and some old acquaintances have changed, and then continues all the way to St. Paul, Minnesota.

Twain’s humor, as he recounts conversations with people, sights seen, reminiscences dredged up, and a myriad of other matters that fill the book, is always evident. It’s one of the great books on the mighty river, and whether you are a lover of the works of Mark Twain or interested in the Mississippi River during the time period just before and after the Civil War, you will enjoy this book.

I remeber reading the Ramona books as a child and recently purchased the collection for my 8 yr. old and 5 yr. old daughters. They beg every night to hear another chapter read to them. The stories and situations are timeless and they can easily identify with Ramona and Beezus. The stories are told from a child’s point of view, which can be sometimes enlightening for us grownups who have forgotten what it’s like to be 4 or 5 years old. My girls delight in hearing about Ramona’s occaisional “wickedness” and very stubborn nature.

I find myself giggling when I recognize things from the era that it was written (my childhood!) like putting plastic bread bags over your shoes and then stuffing them into rubber boots! I highly recommend this collection of books. The word wholesome comes to mind.

I loved these books as a kid and now my daughter’s love the stories too. The illustrations inside are enough to help give the kids a little idea and then they picture the rest inside their heads as we read along! I really do prefer these Ramona stories compared to the Junie B Jones stories. Ramona seems to be alot more wholesome where I do find that Junie B Jones can be quite the rude little girl often. Very nice to be able to share with my girls and they are always trying to tell the stories to their friend that see the books too. Very cute!

My daughter is 7 and devoured the Ramona books. She was able to relate to the character and found these books easy to read. They were her first page turners!
